Letter extract – Coimbatore, 20.11.2017
Dear Malli,
Twenty girls & boys of class six, plus three teachers (Geetha madam leading), set off for Ooty.
Grandma had often praised the toy-train ride—spectacular slopes, birds, dancing trees.
Stepping into the blue-and-cream wooden compartment I bubbled with excitement; cushioned seats, oil-painted walls, mesh luggage rack.
“Hi Fatima, reserved a seat for you!”
Train jerked, hooted, snaked uphill slowly.
Muthu boasted he could walk alongside; teacher ordered him back—girls sniggered.
Quick check
- Where did they go?
- Why did Muthu say he could walk beside the train?
- Why did the girls snigger?
Section II – Silent reading (underline scenery sentences)
Purple-blue mountains backdrop green tea estates; monkeys racing, babies clinging.
One monkey snatched a banana from a girl leaning out—she screamed; Muthu now sniggered.
Misty clouds drifted like a dream sequence; bubbling stream, small waterfall, blue crowned bird.
Sudden thud—train halted. Children poured out despite Geetha madam’s calls.
Discuss
- Why the scream?
- Why step out?
- Describe the mountain beauty.
Section III – Partner reading & discussion
Baby elephant sitting on track; mother trumpeting.
Driver failed to coax it with bananas.
Muthu’s presence-of-mind: lured baby off track step-by-step with bananas; mother calmed.
Train delayed 30 min, then chugged on.
Memory treasure: wind-swept tea estates, cloud-capped peaks, bird-music, murmuring streams—and elephants!
Think & answer
